Co‐Located Wind and Temperature Observations at Mid‐Latitudes During Mesospheric Inversion Layer Events

چکیده

The mesospheric inversion layer (MIL) phenomenon is a temperature enhancement (10–50 K) in vertical (∼10 km) lasting several days and spanning thousands of kilometers within the mesosphere. As MILs govern variability, their study crucial for better understanding middle-atmosphere global circulation. MIL also important applications aeronautics as perturbations mesosphere are significant issues safe reentry rockets, space shuttles, or missiles. However, description this remains incomplete, since no observations MIL's effects on winds exist, hampering an mechanisms responsible formation. This investigates simultaneous wind-temperature altitude range 30–90 km during events. Strong deceleration occurred same inversion, confirming role gravity waves formation mechanisms.

Lidar measurements of mesospheric temperature inversion at a low latitude

The Rayleigh lidar data collected on 119 nights from March 1998 to February 2000 were used to study the statistical characteristics of the low latitude mesospheric temperature inversion observed over Gadanki (13.5 N, 79.2 E), India. The occurrence frequency of the inversion showed semiannual variation with maxima in the equinoxes and minima in the summer and winter, which was quite different fr...

The near‐global mesospheric potassium layer: Observations and modeling

The meteoric metal layers act as unique tracers of chemistry and dynamics in the upper atmosphere. Existing lidar studies from a few locations show that K exhibits a semiannual seasonality (winter and summer maxima), quite unlike the annual seasonality (winter maximum and summer minimum) seen with Na and Fe. This work uses spaceborne observations made with the Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed ...

Gravity Wave Dynamics in a Mesospheric Inversion Layer: 1. Reflection, Trapping, and Instability Dynamics

An anelastic numerical model is employed to explore the dynamics of gravity waves (GWs) encountering a mesosphere inversion layer (MIL) having a moderate static stability enhancement and a layer of weaker static stability above. Instabilities occur within the MIL when the GW amplitude approaches that required for GW breaking due to compression of the vertical wavelength accompanying the increas...

Study of the tidal variations in mesospheric temperature at low and mid latitudes from WINDII and potassium lidar observations

Zonal mean daytime temperatures from the Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII) on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) and nightly temperatures from a potassium (K) lidar are employed in the study of the tidal variations in mesospheric temperature at low and mid latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. The analysis is applied to observations at 89 km height for winter solstice, December t...
